Sheesh

Arema Frost

Sheesh hunched in the dimness and licked the damaged limb. The blood was warm, salty, and coppery. Emptiness gnawed, making its stomach growl. It would have to hunt soon or it would be too weak. It tested its weight on the damaged limb and mewed in pain. Sheesh was hunting when it fell through shining light to this strange place. The single moon was bright, shining with a silver light. It did not like the smells here. It was wrong, confusing. Slowly Sheesh crept from the dark hole and searched the surroundings. Sheesh could hear many sounds of life. Every hair on Sheesh’s body was erect, sensing strangeness. Its uninjured foot-hand broke a twig from a plant and brought it close to Sheesh’s nose. The laurel branch made Sheesh sneeze. It shook its head and sneezed again, eyes blurring as tears flowed instantly to wash away the unfamiliarly distressing scent. Shaking its head in agitation, Sheesh began to move off. It would hunt and find what it needed. Sheesh made a low wailing cough, signaling its hunt.

Andrew looked up at the peculiar sound. His face looked alien with the micro goggles. He just placed the newly completed circuit board into his micro radio transmitter. It should have worked but when he turned on the power, a strange current buzzed from his construction sending an electric shock arcing from his experimental machine. His entire body resonated with shock before his machine smoked and went dead. It must have been the electricity that made him think he saw something before the machine died. It was certainly dead now. Andrew stood and stretched. Looking at his watch, he was surprised at how late it was. He missed lunch and dinner. No wonder he felt empty. His arm hurt where the electricity stung him and he was aware of hunger, pain, and emptiness. For a moment, he felt alone and confused.

“Get it together, Andrew. You’re losing it.” He muttered aloud. Staggering with fatigue Andrew went to the kitchen to look for something to eat. Nothing looked appetizing. He pulled an energy bar from the cabinet, ripped the paper off, and crammed it into his mouth.

Sheesh caught the small creature and buried its hollow fangs in its throat. Along with the blood, it absorbed its life energy. The taste was strange and the energy level small but it eased the hunger. Now, Sheesh sensed the larger beast in the cave of dead wood. Sheesh stumbled towards it, holding its injured foot-hand to its chest. The life force was strong, burning brightly. It was exactly the life energy Sheesh needed.

Hearing a scratching at the door, Andrew opened it to see an elf? A cat? She, It was holding her arm. Andrew opened his mouth to speak just as the weird creature leaped at him and fastened its fangs in his jugular. Stunned, Andrew felt his life slip away as blood and life saving energy flowed into Sheesh.
